I support neurodivergent adults and parents of neurodivergent children from an affirming and strengths-based perspective. Neurodiversity is a broad term that includes the complete range of neurotypes that are normal expressions of the human experience, from allistic to autistic, ADHD, gifted, etc. Neurodivergent generally refers to neurotypes that deviate from what society defines as “typical”.

Neurodivergent adults

Counselling for neurodivergent adults focuses on supporting individuals in embracing their unique neurological traits while addressing the challenges they may face in a society that often prioritizes neurotypical ways of thinking and behaving. A neurodiversity-affirming perspective shifts the focus from “fixing” or “curing” neurodivergence to understanding and valuing these differences as an integral part of a person’s identity. Through a strengths-based approach, I work with neurodivergent adults to help them identify their unique abilities and coping strategies. This can involve exploring self-advocacy, managing sensory sensitivities, and navigating social interactions in a way that affirms the individuals needs and unique identity. The goal is to help individuals better understand their experiences, reduce self-stigma, and develop strategies to thrive in environments that may not always be supportive of their needs.

Parents of neurodivergent children

For parents of neurodivergent children, counselling can offer guidance and support in navigating the complexities of raising a child whose needs may not always align with societal expectations. A neurodiversity-affirming approach empowers parents to recognize their child’s neurodivergence as a natural variation in human development rather than something that needs to be “fixed.” Therapy can help parents understand their child’s communication styles, sensory preferences, and emotional needs so that they can become supportive advocates for their children within educational and social systems, challenging the often rigid norms that may not fully accommodate neurodivergent ways of being.

How counselling can help

By focusing on strengths, acceptance, and empowerment, neurodiversity-affirming counselling helps both adults and parents of neurodivergent children create lives that reflect their authentic selves, unburdened by societal expectations that do not recognize or celebrate their full humanity.

I use client-led and anti-oppressive counselling approaches with all my clients, and especially with neurodivergent adults and parents of neurodivergent children. These approaches include Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS), somatic therapy, narrative therapy and feminist therapy.
